Newton Wrestler Ashley Iliff Hosts All-Girl Tournament in Sussex County
Ashley Iliff, daughter of two-time state champion Andy Ilif, became the first girl to wrestle for four years in the Newton program in 2012.
On Sunday morning, the 24-year-old Newton native and her father helped organize one of the first all-girl wrestling tournaments in Sussex County at Merriam Avenue School.
The event brought 76 female wrestlers from ages 4 to 14, from as far as Bound Brook and Howell, together to wrestle in three or four matches apiece.
And this is just the beginning.
"Last year alone, there was maybe one (girl) on one (high school) team I would see. Now I see a few girls on almost every team popping up," Iliff said."The encouragement alone from different coaches, their vision with women and equality is wonderful because they're all for it and they jumped right in with the boys teams. They're actually encouraging women to come out, so I like to see all the positive attitudes about women coming into the sport."
