Pope John Wins Sam Cali Invitational, Epperly Earns MOW
Pope John was the overall team champion of the 2nd Annual Sam Cali Invitational with 161.5 points while St. Peter's Prep (140), Seton Hall Prep (136.5), Jackson Memorial (128.5) and Westfield (121.5) rounded out the top five, according to Patrick Lanni of NJ Advance Media.
Jackson Memorial junior Kyle Epperly took home a championship belt at 195 pounds and the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award on Saturday after proving to be one of the tournament's breakout stars.
The tournament featured nearly 40 teams from four different states, six of which entered ranked in the NJ.com Top 20.
Overall, 15 state-ranked wrestlers were in action, five of which went on to win titles, including Pope John's Eddie Ventresca (120), Westfield's C.J. Composto (126), Pope John's JoJo Aragona (138) and Garfield's Michael Filieri (220).
