Shane Reitsma, a junior at Howell, isn't just the #1 ranked wrestler in New Jersey at 170 pounds.
He's also now the owner of an initiative entitled "Change the Statistics" which aims to help with issues of bullying and suicide.
The project, which was inspired by the memory of his uncle, encourages students to "look out for one another with constant offerings of conversation, support, and kindness to help anyone struggling with bullying, anxiety, and social isolation," according to the Freehold Regional High School District.
According to Kimbery Bosco of Jersey Shore Online, Reitsma's project gained so much momentum that he was even featured recently on CNN as a Positive Athlete. CNN's Positive Athlete program "celebrates student-athletes across America who have accomplished the extraordinary by overcoming difficult circumstances, giving back to their communities, or simply having an infectious positive attitude," according to their website.
Awesome job, Shane!
