Wayne Valley Downs Wayne Hills After Third Annual Alumni Match
Wayne Hills jumped out to an early lead, but Wayne Valley proved to be too much winning the match 36-21.
Danny Murphy's 10-7 win at 195 pounds over Gabe Dellachiaie of Wayne Hills was pivotal, according to Sean Farrell of the North Jersey Record. The Indians were up just 15-14 during the match and saw Dellachiaie get a takedown in the opening 30 seconds. Murphy tied it up after one and went up 7-4 after the second period. After giving back the lead to start the third, Murphy then delivered the winning takedown with about a minute to go.
Before the crosstown rivalry began, Wayne Valley hosted its third annual alumni match, welcoming back graduates ranging from the class of 1966 to the class of 2018.
Many Indian grapplers from the past were in attendance: John Lucia, Wayne Valley's lone state champion who won his crown at 141 pounds back in 1966; longtime coaches Bob Bishop and Al Demarest; Dave Drozjock, a standout 148-pounder who is now the school's athletic director; and Coach Todd Schroeder, the sixth-year coach who was a state medalist and once held the school wins record before going on to wrestle for James Madison, among many others.
Wayne Valley takes a 5-3 record heading into tonight's Jan. 11 match at home against Passaic Valley.
